Closing Opal Clinic, Box Hill
Opal Clinic will be closing, (at least for a while) on May 23, 2008, when the Box Hill lease runs out. This not because of poor results, far from it. The basic problem is that there aren’t enough people choosing our treatment to support our high cost structure.
The vast majority of Australians are content to accept the outcomes achieved by conventional cancer therapies, and with insurance coverage, it is certainly the cheapest option. The market for people looking for longer term survival and/or avoiding toxic and debilitating therapies is small. The government does not allow us to advertise or to make claims. GP’s and other doctors are under legal and peer pressure to recommend the standard therapies, no matter what they think of their efficacy and safety. There is a significant cost issue. Opal therapies are cheap by cancer standards, but not cheap to the patient.
We are a stand alone clinic, and this is expensive. Other clinics have substantial other sources of revenue. Dr Wang in China is a top oncologist and where possible almost always recommends our sono- photodynamic therapy ,SPDT. ( Chinese law requires Chinese patients to first get standard therapies and for them to fail, before they can get unapproved therapies. This does not apply to foreign patients). Patients who can afford it will choose this therapy. If there are no SPDT patients, there are many other patients to pay the bills. Dr Kenyon in England has a long established clinic for treating people with “ impossible” health problems. He almost always recommends SPDT and/or enzyme therapy for his cancer patients. Last I heard, he had a waiting list for SPDT treatment. Once again, if there are no cancer patients, there are plenty of others.
A. What needs to happen to get Opal up and running
We are putting all the equipment in storage, so it will not be hard to start up again. What we need is either:
1. A doctor with an existing practice who has the time and interest to add SPDT to his practice. He/she would need another one or two rooms for the treatment equipment. This operation would be viable even with our present patient numbers. If there were no SPDT patients, there would be enough other patients to pay the bills; OR
2. We have a short term option on excellent premises in Glenhuntly Rd, South Caulfield. We need a doctor who is willing to move his/her practice to these premises, and be on site when our doctor is not there. Our doctors would continue SPDT treatment on a part time basis, the new doctor would handle any problems during their absence. Nina, Linda and Jo would do the treatment. This option is only likely to be available for another couple of days.
B. Existing enzyme therapy patients
We will continue to supply the enzyme, and our doctors will continue to provide medical supervision. Please discuss with clinic staff for details.
We cannot accept new patients until we have a viable new clinic.
C. Patients requiring some combination of SPDT, tumour de-bulking treatments which are not available in Australia, and in-hospital treatment.
I recommend that you get treated by Dr Wang in Guangzhou, China. We have already sent patients to Dr Wang, with outstanding success. In my view, Dr Wang is the best oncologist in the world. Not because I know much about the other oncologists, but because he and his colleagues are the only ones doing SPDT. The others cannot compete without this therapy.
